AirAsia X becomes the first low-cost airline to offer international flights out of Tokyo's Haneda airport today as its service to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia gets under way.

The route brings Haneda into AirAsia's network of more than 400 destinations in 25 countries and is widely expected to revolutionize air travel from Japan, previously dominated by the country's two national carriers JAL and ANA.

AirAsia X chairman Dato' Kamarudin Meranun told Aviation Record: "The Kuala Lumpur-Tokyo route will not only benefit tourism, but also further enhance business and economic ties between the [Asean] region and Japan."
